How making your bed every morning can change your life

Imagine if there was one simple task you could do every morning that could help you to feel happier, more productive and more successful.

If it existed would you do it?

Well, research is showing that this magic task does exist and all it involves is you making your bed every morning.

No, this is not a scam set up by your mother, (although it seems that she may have been onto something). This is research that has been collected from numerous studies looking into habits that are followed by the successful.

In fact, research from around the world is finding that the humble act of making your bed could change your life.

Making your bed every morning seems simple enough, but can it really help to change your life?

It may seem like a pointless chore, but an interesting study conducted by Hunch found a correlation between those who made their bed every morning and their quality of life.

In a survey of 68,000 people-

  • 27 percent made their bed each morning
  • 59 percent never made their bed in the morning
  • 12 percent paid a housekeeper to do it


From the survey, 71 percent of bed makers reported that they were happy with their lives, whereas only 62 percent of people who didn’t make their bed in the morning reported that they were happy with their lives.

Bed makers were also shown to be more satisfied with their career, happier with where they lived and more likely to exercise.

Those who didn’t make their bed were more likely to hate their job and hate the idea of exercising. They were also more likely to report a lower quality of sleep than those who made their bed.

Overall, the study found that those who made their bed every morning were likely to be happier and more satisfied with their lives in general, compared to those who never made their bed.

While the study may only show a correlation, there is growing evidence that making your bed every morning can help to positively impact your life and set you up on the path of success.

Popular author, Charles Duhigg who wrote the book, The Power of Habit, believes that making your bed can be one of the easiest ways to set your life on the track of success.

“Making your bed every morning is correlated with better productivity, a greater sense of well-being and stronger skills at sticking with a budget.”

Duhigg refers to making your bed as a “keystone habit” that sets you up for being productive throughout the rest of the day.

When you make your bed each morning it gives you a small sense of accomplishment, which in the long run can have a profound impact on how productive and successful you are.

Navy Seal, William H. McRaven also advised graduates at the University of Texas to make their beds during his commencement speech, suggesting-

“If you want to change the world, start off by making your bed. If you make your bed every morning, you will have accomplished the first task of the day. It will give you a small sense of pride and it will encourage you to do another task and another and another. And by the end of the day, that one task completed will have turned into many tasks completed.”

Making your bed is not only linked to higher productivity, but also higher levels of happiness and better sleep.

In fact, the ancient Chinese art of Feng Shui also suggests that those who make their bed will feel more energised and rested throughout the day, whereas those who don’t may feel groggy or tired.

Feng Shui expert, Karen Kingston commented- “when you leave your bedding in a messy heap, you will tend to muddle through the day until it is time to fall back into bed again.”

There is a lot of research out there on the profound affects of making your bed, but the only way to know for sure is to test it out in your own life.

If you are not a regular bed maker, setting up the habit can perhaps help you to find more happiness, success and productivity throughout the day.

Here are some helpful tips on how to make your bed in a way that even your mother would be proud of-

Step 1: Straighten the fitted sheet by pulling it extra tight around your mattress. You can also use sheet straps to help keep your fitted sheet in place and easier to tighten.

Step 2: Place the flat sheet upside down over the fitted sheet. This is so when you fold over the top edge you can see the pattern or finished edge. Tuck the sheet in at the bottom of the bed by folding the corners in a neat diagonal so they are flush against the mattress. Continue tucking in the sheet all along the bed.

Step 3: Shake out the doona and centre it over the bed. There should be equal amounts of overhang along all sides of the bed. Fold back the top of the doona along with the flat sheet if desired. Ensure that the exposed sheet and doona is neat and straight.

Step 4: Fluff your pillows and ensure that your pillowcases are neatly aligned.
For a professional look, start with three larger accent pillows against the headboard. For the second row use your standard pillows and then for your third row add a decorative pillow or two. If copious amounts of pillows are not your thing, try just a single lumbar pillow. This helps to give your bed a complete look and doesn’t require a lot of effort.

Step 5: To really beautify things, you can also add a folded textured blanket at the end of the bed.  

Making your bed can truly take less than 5 minutes, but it appears that there are so many benefits that it can offer in return.

As Navy Seal McRaven reminds us-

“If you can’t do the little things right, you’ll never be able to do the big things right. And if by chance you have a miserable day, you will come home to a bed that is made- that you made. And a made bed gives you the encouragement that tomorrow will be better.”

Coming home to a made bed at the end of the day is a wonderful feeling, and as you tuck yourself up in your clean, crisp sheets, you will be thankful that you spent the time to make your bed.
