Waking up at the same time every night? Here's why.

Do you find yourself waking up at the same time each night?

According to traditional Chinese Medicine, waking up at the same time every night could indicate an emotional or physiological imbalance in a particular area of your body.

In Chinese Medicine, there is an ancient body clock that determines which time of day an organ is most active. It is believed that waking up or feeling restless during this “active” time, could indicate an energetic or emotional imbalance in that organ.

So, if you find yourself…

Waking Up Between 9pm-11pm

It could indicate:

- Adrenal issues
- Thyroid issues
- Stress and Anxiety

Most people are going to bed at the time, but if you find yourself struggling to fall asleep or waking up during this time period, it could indicate an imbalance in your thyroid or adrenals.

The adrenals are responsible for regulating your stress response, so heightened stress or anxiety may also contribute to being awake during these times.

Waking Up Between 11pm- 1am

It could indicate:

- Gallbladder issues
- Feelings of self judgement
- A need to forgive

If you find yourself waking up during this time period, it could indicate gallbladder issues. The gallbladder is responsible for helping to breakdown fats, so you may also find yourself waking up at this time after a rich or fatty meal.

In Chinese Medicine, the gallbladder also represents feelings of self- judgement and a need to forgive yourself or others.

Waking Up Between 1am-3am

It could indicate:

- Liver issues
- Hidden Anger
- Unexpressed resentment

Between the hours of 1-3am is the time of liver, which is responsible for many functions in the body including digestion, hormonal imbalance and the clearing of toxins.

If you find yourself waking up between 1am to 3am, it could indicate liver issues, or an overworked liver due to drinking too much, overeating or certain medications.

In Chinese Medicine, the liver is also associated with feelings of anger, frustration and even pent up rage. Waking up at this time every night could therefore also indicate a need to release and express any pent up anger.

Waking Up Between 5-7am

It could indicate:

- Large Intestine issues
- A feeling of being held back
- Holding onto the past

Waking up between 5-7 am indicates a time when the large intestine is most active. Voluntarily waking up at this time is one thing, but if you find that you are
constantly waking up between 5-7am even when your alarm is not set, it could indicate issues with your digestive system or large intestine.

During the early hours of the morning, many Chinese Medicine practitioners also believe that it is the best time to eliminate waste from your bowels and eat your biggest meal of the day.

Emotionally, this time of day is also linked to feeling emotionally blocked or restricted in some way. It could also indicate a feeling of being held back in your life or holding on to the past.
